Drinking water from treated municipal wastewater

VEOLIA and SWT have been working together to evaluate SWT technology for converting treated wastewater into indirect drinking water.

In a first of its kind in Europe, treated wastewater is being converted into indirect drinking water, by post treating and inserting it back into a freshwater reservoir. VEOLIA has developed the entire solution in collaboration with the local municipality in Vendee region.

The plant currently treats 150 m3/h of wastewater using a combination of Ultrafiltration and Reverse Osmosis. In addition, VEOLIA is evaluating new technologies/products for improving this solution.

SWT’s CAP3D technology is being evaluated as a replacement for the RO solution, with the primary focus being on improving energy and water efficiency. SWT’s FORS pilot unit is running on the field and is being evaluated for the removal and/or reduction of the following contaminants from treated wastewater:

  • Chlorides
  • Nitrates
  • Phosphates
  • Hardness
  • DOM
  • Pesticides
  • Pharmaceuticals
